Cardinal who backs progressives tapped to present family manifesto!

ROME – In a move possibly hinting that Pope Francis will side with progressives on some contentious matters regarding family life, the Vatican announced Thursday that a keenly anticipated document from the pontiff will be released April 8 and presented by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, Austria.

The document, technically known as an “apostolic exhortation,” is designed to draw conclusions from two tumultuous summits of Catholic bishops from around the world, called “synods,” on issues pertaining to the family held in October 2014 and October 2015.

Carrying the Latin title Amoris Laetitia, subtitled “On Love in the Family,” the document will be presented in an April 8 Vatican news conference featuring Schönborn and Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the synod secretary, along with two Italian academics.

That press conference will be streamed live on the Vatican Radio site.

Although the Vatican did not release details about the document’s contents on Thursday, in broad strokes it’s expected to echo areas of wide agreement among the bishops during those summits, such as the need for more thorough programs of marriage preparation and the importance of supporting families trying to live the Church’s vision of married life.

However, the synods also exposed clear divisions among the bishops on three key issues:

Whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics ought to be able to return to Communion under some circumstances.

Whether the Church needs more tolerant language to talk about gay and lesbian relationships, without altering the substance of its teaching.

Whether the Church can acknowledge positive moral values even in “irregular” relationships, such as living together outside of marriage.

During the two synods, Schönborn was seen as a leading exponent of the moderate-to-progressive position on those issues.

He was part of a German-language group, for instance, which proposed an “internal forum” solution to the question about Communion for those Catholics who divorce and remarry outside the Church.

The “internal forum” refers to private exchanges between believers and priests or bishops, generally in the context of the sacrament of confession. Although canon lawyers debate whether, and how, it could be applied to the divorced and remarried, advocates of allowing them to return to Communion generally see it as way to accomplish that on a private, case-by-case basis.

During an Oct. 26 press conference last year, Schönborn, whose own parents were divorced when he was a teenager, told reporters he felt that the synod could not recommend a clear yes or no to Communion for the divorced and remarried.

“There is no black and white, a simple yes or no,” he said, arguing that situations vary widely and so too must the Church’s response. 

On the issue of how the Church talks about gays and lesbians, Schönborn also has been a champion of more inclusive approach.

“The Church should not look in the bedroom first, but in the dining room!” he said in a September 2015 interview with Civiltà Cattolica, a Jesuit-run journal in Rome.

“We can and we must respect the decision to form a union with a person of the same sex, [and] to seek means under civil law to protect their living together with laws to ensure such protection,” he said in that interview.

Schönborn spoke of a gay friend who, after multiple temporary relationships, now has a stable partner.

“They share a life, they share their joys and sufferings, they help one another,” he said. “It must be recognized that this person took an important step for his own good and the good of others, even though it certainly is not a situation the Church can consider ‘regular’!!”

During the 2014 synod, Schönborn also argued that the Church can find positive moral elements in other non-traditional relationships, such as cohabitation outside marriage.

He drew an analogy with Lumen Gentium, a document of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which taught that there are “elements of sanctification and of truth” outside the visible boundaries of the Catholic Church.

In the same way, he suggested, there may be virtues and truth in relationships that fall short of the Church’s full vision of marriage as a permanent, lifelong union between a man and a woman open to new life.

“Who are we to judge and say that there are no elements of truth and sanctification in [those relationships]?!!” he asked in 2014.

Given that track record, the choice of Schönborn to present the pope’s document may be an indication of where Francis is likely to come down on those matters, at least in a big-picture sense.

It may also reflect a degree of political savvy, since despite his progressive-seeming stances on the key synod debates, Schönborn nevertheless also has solid conservative credentials.

He’s an intellectual protégé of emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, for instance, and was also the general editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church under St. John Paul II.

A member of the Dominican religious order, the 71-year-old Schönborn is widely regarded as one of the most intellectually impressive members of the College of Cardinals, and was mentioned as a possible candidate to be pope himself in both the conclaves of 2005 and 2013.

A three-week Synod of Bishops to talk in the abstract about Catholic teaching on the family makes no sense to Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna.

“We are all called to observe the situation, not gazing from above and beginning with abstract ideas, but with the gaze of pastors who scrutinise today’s reality in an evangelical spirit,” the cardinal said in an interview with Jesuit Fr Antonio Spadaro, editor of La Civiltà Cattolica.

In the early September interview, the cardinal spoke about his experience at the extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the family last year, about his own parents’ divorce, about the relationships of his friends and about his hopes for the world Synod of Bishops on the family next month.

The approach the bishops are called to take, he said, “is not first of all a critical gaze that highlights every failure, but a benevolent gaze that sees how much good will and how much effort there is even in the midst of much suffering”.

The next step, he said, is not to pretend that everything in all those situations is fine, but to help Catholics build on what is good, growing in holiness and faithfulness to God and to each other.

The Church’s ministers, the cardinal said, should recognize what is good where it is found. For example, he said, a civil marriage is better than simply living together, because it signifies a couple has made a formal, public commitment to one another. “Instead of talking about everything that is missing, we can draw close to this reality, noting what is positive in this love that is establishing itself.”

“We are not at risk of diluting the clarity [of Church teaching] while walking with people because we are called to walk in the faith,” he said. No synod member wants to change Church teaching.

However, he said, at the 2014 extraordinary synod it seemed that many synod members had very abstract ideas – and actually rather modern ideas – of what the reality of marriage is, ignoring that “for centuries, perhaps millennia”, marriage was a sacrament reserved to the upper classes who could afford a dowry and a ceremony.

“In the Vienna baptismal records of the 1800s, about half of the babies were illegitimate, children of all those servants in the upper-class homes who could not marry because they did not have the means,” he said.

More and more young people today are living together instead of marrying, many of them because of a lack of financial security, he said. The bishops need to ask themselves: “Are we here to deplore this phenomenon instead of asking ourselves what has changed?”

“There is a risk of easily pointing a finger at hedonism and individualism,” he said, when “it takes much more effort to observe the realities carefully” and respond helpfully.

Cardinal Schönborn said that being a child of divorced parents – and of a father who remarried – he knows what it is to grow up in a “patchwork family”. And despite it not conforming fully to the Church’s ideal, “I also experienced the radical goodness of the family” with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who helped out.

Unfortunately, he said, the media seem to have made the treatment of Catholics who are divorced and civilly remarried without an annulment into a “test case” for Pope Francis, asking: “In the end, will there be mercy for those in irregular unions?”, meaning allowing them to receive the sacraments.

But a blanket edict, he said, is not the attitude of Christ, the good shepherd; “the attitude of the Good Shepherd is, first of all, to accompany persons”, helping them heal.

They want mercy from the Church, the cardinal said, “but the first mercy to be requested is not that of the Church, it is mercy toward their children” and toward the ex-husband or ex-wife. The Church’s ministers can help them move in that direction, too, he said.

The mission accompanying the cardinal will be composed of Rev. Yurij Kolasa, vicar for Greek-Catholics in Austria, and Rev. Ihor Sfiaban, head of the Ecumenical Commission of the Curia of the Major Archbishop.

Who is St. Nilus

St. Nilus was one of the many disciples and fervent defenders of St. John Chrysostom. He was an officer at the Court of Constantinople, married, with two sons. While St. John Chrysostom was patriarch, before his exile (398-403), he directed Nilus in the study of Scripture and in works of piety. St. Nilus left his wife and one son and took the other, Theodulos, with him to Mount Sinai to be a monk. The Bishop of Eleusa ordained both St. Nilus and his son to the priesthood. The mother and other son also embraced the religious life in Egypt. 

From his monastery at Sinai, St. Nilus was a well-known person throughout the Eastern Church. Through his writings and correspondence, he played an important part in the history of his time. He was known as a theologian, Biblical scholar and ascetic writer, so people of all kinds, from the Emperor down wrote to consult him. His numerous works, including a multitude of letters, consist of denunciations of heresy, paganism, abuses of discipline and crimes.

St. Nilus must be counted as one of the leading ascetic writers of the 5th century. His feast is kept on November 12th in the Byzantine Calendar; he is commemorated also in the Roman Martyrology on the same date. St. Nilus probably died around the year 430, as there is no evidence of his life after that.

At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society.

       At that future time, due to the power of such great crimes and licentiousness, people will be deprived of the grace of the Holy Spirit, which they received in Holy Baptism, and equally of remorse.

       The Churches of God will be deprived of God-fearing and pious pastors, and woe to the Christians remaining in the world at that time; many will completely lose their Faith because they will lack the opportunity of seeing the light of knowledge from anyone at all.

       Then they will separate themselves out of the world in holy refuges in search of lightening their spiritual sufferings, but everywhere they will meet obstacles and constraints.

       And all this will result from the fact that the Antichrist will want to be Lord over everything and become the ruler of the whole universe, and he will produce miracles and fantastic signs. He will also give depraved wisdom to an unhappy man so that he will discover a way by which one man can carry on a conversation with another from one end of the earth to the other (Internet). At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish (airplanes, submarines). And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist. And, the impious one!e will so complete science with vanity that it will go off the right path and lead people to lose faith in the existence of God and in the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity.

       Then the All-good God will see the downfall of the human race and will shorten the days for the sake of those few who are being saved, because the enemy wants to lead even the chosen into temptation, if that is possible … then the sword of chastisement will suddenly appear and kill the pervert and his servants.

The people that will be living around the eighth century (7500 years since the creation), will acquiesce into corruption of the flesh, and will argue incessantly with no beginning and no end. Then the eighth Synod will convene….and things will become peaceful for a while, but soon people’s minds will revert back to the evil ways and perdition. They will not respect the sanctity of marriage but with dissipation will gravitate towards perdition which will be worse than during Sodom and Gomorrah… committing many more evil works. The more evil works, the more calamities will befall the people. Love of money will become an insatiable passion. Greed leads to perdition and destitution leads to salvation, for man is risking salvation through greed.         

       This curse (greed) will bring great sorrow to the world and happiness will disappear and will be replaced with discord. Greed will be the throne of the Antichrist. Greed offers to the world lies and people are attracted to lies and become lawless being abducted by injustice. Truth has disappeared and everybody believes in lies. Truth is the intimate economy of Christ and of the teaching of the Gospel, but the lie is the advent of the Antichrist and his kingdom, which wishes to bring global calamity and perdition to the world. Like the Prophets prophesied the coming of the Lord, likewise over concern will darken the intellect of men, they will become insensitive to their salvation from their over concerns they may have.Salvation will be rescued only by those that refrain from partaking in the works of the Antichrist whose works are the cares of this world and the hoarding of treasures. Today’s men are given over to hoarding treasures and worries and have surrendered themselves over to perdition through looting, betrayals, lies, homosexuality, gluttony, pride , hardness of heart and overwhelming avarice….           

When the world will become impoverished of the grace of the Holy Spirit, then the world will be encircled by all types of calamities. Firstly the world will suffer from lack of love, peace and moderation. Secondly, every country will suffer and there will be great loss of capital from every country. The Church of Christ will also suffer due to lack of priests and spiritual shepherds.   After this calamity the unclean one will be born from the belly of filth and will bring forth signs and beasts with demonic fantasy, pretending to the world that he is meek and humble at heart but he will be foxy at heart and a wolf at mind. His sustenance will be the agitation of the people and whenever the people become agitated, he, the Antichrist, will be filled.          

 The agitation of the people due to condemnation, envy, vindictiveness, hatred, enmity, greed, homosexuality, adultery, fornication, loss of faith arrogance, will be the food of the Antichrist, who will be the head of many countries and have authority over all the world.He will have power over the feelings of people and all will believe him because he will be the dictator and emperor and he will bring spiritual loss to the people. Those that are on the way to perdition will believe that they are being saved.          

       Then the Gospel will be ignored because the spiritual loss will bring great unhappiness in the world and signs and terrible events will occur. Man will hunger greatly and will not be able to be filled, for then he will be eating seven times more than he eats now but he would still not be satisfied and there will be great sorrows everywhere.Then, whoever was sealed with the seal of the Antichrist, many will die in the streets and the heart of most will weaken, not being able to bear hunger and faintness, they will revert to eating the dead. On the seal will be written, “you are mine, yes I am yours, voluntarily I come and not by force”. Woe to him who bears the seal, for there will be a great agitation in the world. God seeing the unsettling of the people, will order the sea to become exceedingly warm, so when the Antichrist will sit on his cursed throne, the sea will boil like molten copper and the earth will be depleted of vegetation and trees from the warmth of the sea and the source tributaries will dry up and the animals and birds will die from the breath of the sea.

       And then the day will be like an hour, the week like a day, the month like a week. Due to the wickedness of man, the elements will speed up, that the time will end soon, as proclaimed by God. Then will come the prophets Elijah and just Enoch to proclaim that whoever is patient and is not marked by the seal of the antichrist, will be saved and will be accepted by God in paradise eternally, only that he not be marked with the seal, but instead make the sign of the Cross, for the seal of the Cross frees man from the torments of hell while the seal of the antichrist delivers him to the torments of hell. And if they hunger, they should not ask for food but should have patience, for He will send help from above… The most wicked children of the Antichrist are: fornication, adultery, homosexuality, murder, confiscation, stealing, injustice, lies, torture, the buying and the selling of man….. So evil will human nature become, that they will use wickedness worse than the demons…. And the Antichrist seeing that human nature became more evil than the demons, will rejoice greatly….

Austria’s bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst has hogged the limelight ahead of Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest final, but things have gotten hairy for her among socially conservative Europeans, including some gays.

“I created this bearded lady to show the world that you can do whatever you want,” said Wurst, the drag persona of 25-year-old Austrian singer Tom Neuwirth, at a recent press conference in Copenhagen.

“If you’re not hurting anyone you can do whatever you like with your life and, it’s so cheesy, but we’ve only got one (life),” she added.

Wurst’s James Bond theme-like ballad “Rise Like a Phoenix” is widely expected to make it through Thursday’s semi-final in the Danish capital, but few pundits believe she will take the Eurovision crown.

However, comments by Armenian Eurovision hopeful Aram MP3 — one of the bookies’ favourites this year — that Wurst’s lifestyle was “not natural” have boosted her profile, even though the stand-up comedian later claimed his comments were a joke.

“He apologised by saying his comments were a joke and badly translated,” Wurst said.

“I have to say that if it’s a joke it’s not funny … but he apologised and that’s fine for me,” she added.

There have also been petitions to have her removed from the competition in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, where a law banning “gay propaganda” was signed by President Vladimir Putin last year.

St Petersburg lawmaker Vitaly Milonov reportedly asked his country’s Eurovision selection committee not to send any Russian musicians to the event, which he accused of being “blatant propaganda of homosexuality and spiritual decay”.

The outrage highlights a cultural divide between eastern Europe and the countries of the west, where the camp spectacle’s large gay following is often acknowledged by organisers, local businesses and performers.

The city of Copenhagen has said three gay couples from Russia will get married there in the days leading up to Eurovision as part of an event celebrating 25 years of same-sex unions in Denmark.

Last year, Finnish singer Krista Siegfrids courted the pink vote by entering a gay marriage anthem.

Wurst said her own song reflected the experience of growing up as an outsider in rural Austria.

“It’s a story of going through bad times and struggling through difficult things, and growing out of it and hopefully becoming a better person,” she said.

“For me of course it’s so close to my life … emotionally, growing up,” she added.

Her creator, Tom Neuwirth, rose to fame after finishing second on Austrian talent show Starmania in 2006, after which he joined a short-lived boyband.

Conchita Wurst first appeared in 2011, when she made it to the final of another reality show. The following year she came second in the TV programme that selects the central European country’s Eurovision entry.

Although much of the controversy over her appearance has centred on eastern Europe, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing in her home country.

The leader of the right-wing FPOe party, Heinz-Christian Strache, called her “ridiculous” and threw his support behind another singer, Alf Poier, who suggested she needed psychiatric help.

“If someone doesn’t know if they’re a man or a woman, they should go to a psychotherapist rather than to the song contest,” Poier was quoted by Austrian media as saying.

A German-language Facebook page protesting the decision to send her to Copenhagen has garnered over 38,500 “likes”.

There has also been concern among some members of the gay community that her hirsute drag persona could “scare” people coming to terms with their own sexuality.

“A lot of people say: ‘I’m also gay but I don’t need a beard and a dress to express that,'” she said.

“I can just say to those who don’t really realise yet if they are gay or not, you know, and a bit scared of this change: I don’t want to scare them.

“I just want to show them that they can be accepted in any way. They are allowed to do anything,” she added.
