MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, Pa., (CBS) – Middletown Township, Bucks County has declared a state of emergency for the weekend of the Pope’s visit, according to police.

The township will be directly impacted by having one of the five train stops in the county, according to a press release from Chief of Police Joseph Bartorilla.

“The state of emergency simply places the township in a state of readiness and preparedness for the challenges the weekend may present, and ensures adequate resources are available, if necessary,” said Chief Bartorilla in the press release.

“The state of emergency declaration allows the township to ensure that all of its employees are available to work that weekend, if necessary.  It allows the township to recover expenses used for the event should federal or state funding become available.  And finally, the state of emergency will allow greater access to resources and equipment from the county and state that may be needed for the weekend traffic and crowd management issues,” said Chief Bartorilla.

The chief says the township is working very closely with Bucks County emergency management personnel and with SEPTA in preparing for this event.

While some people are spending as much as $600 a night at hotels for Pope Francis’ highly anticipated visit to Philadelphia, a North Jersey church group is spending less money on a far less luxurious place to stay: the Philadelphia Zoo.

“The zoo makes it a little more down to earth because it’s more like a pilgrimage,” said Melissa Peters, a congregant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey. “We’re not gonna be staying in a hotel room where we have showers or where we have continental breakfasts and things like that. Instead we’re sleeping with animals in order to see the pope.”

Peters and 220 other parents and children from the church will sleep on the floor of the Philly Zoo buildings housing the bird and insect exhibits during the Pope’s visit to Philly for the World Meeting of Families in September.

“A pilgrimage is very different from a vacation or a trip,” said Cathy Hunt, another congregant. “A pilgrimage is a prayer experience and any discomfort that you’ll feel the excitement will be tenfold that.”

Church leaders say Pope Francis was named for Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals. They plan on publicizing their unique accommodations on Instagram and Twitter in the hopes that Pope Francis will take notice.

“If he kisses one of our kids I’ll be smiling the whole ride home,” said Father Gino de la Rama.

The church members will pay $120 a person for the overnight stay at the zoo and the bus ride. The church office said they’re getting phone calls from people asking if there is still room on the zoo floor.

Philadelphia zoo officials say they’re completely sold out however.

The first to register was Pope Francis himself who had previously announced that the theme of the meeting would revolve around mercy. According to the website’s managers, thus far there are 250 “macrogroups” and 300 volunteers signed up. The countdown to the event is already surrounded by great enthusiasm. In exactly one year — from 26 to 31 July 2016 — young people will meet in Krakow for the 31st WYD.

DETROIT – Last night the Satanic Temple‘s private event was open only to people with tickets, which sold for $25 each. Invitations to “The Unveiling” summoned guests to prepare for “a night of chaos, noise, and debauchery… Come dance with the Devil and experience history in the making.” The event location was not announced publicly and was known only to those with tickets.

The group said the bronze Baphomet monument, which weighs about one ton and has never been seen before in public, “is not only an unparalleled artistic triumph, but stands as a testament to plurality and the power of collective action.” The statue, which backed by an inverted pentagram and flanked by statues of two young children gazing up at the creature, shows Satan with horns, hooves, wings and a beard.

The group went on to say the unveiling event “will serve as a call-to-arms from which we’ll kick off our largest fight to date in the name of individual rights to free exercise against self-serving theocrats.”

“It’s sad for a lot of people” said Father Patrick McCale. “For me, it’s just kind of getting through it, encouraging people to have hope.”

St. Elizabeth is the only church in the archdiocese that offers masses in sign langugage, and deaf worshipers come from far and wide to attend.

“That’s the most difficult of all — we’re dealing with people who don’t understand why it’s happening, and I can’t explain why either,” McCale said.

The church is slated to close and merge with St. Monica’s. It’s one of 31 parishes affected by the major reorganization because of financial issues. The archdiocese is hoping the move will lead to fewer but stronger churches.

“I’m depressed,” one woman at the Church of Holy Rosary in East Harlem told 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern. “I love this church. This is like a family church.”

“The decisions were made for us, not by us,” said another worshiper there. “But we talked to each other and we prayed. And so the majority of us, for now, will be going to Mount Carmel, and if it’s God’s will — we were doing a lot of prayer — for us to come back, we will be here.”

Nearby at St. Lucy’s Church, Monsignor Oscar Aquino was saying goodbye to his parishioners.

“We have to see brighter light because we always have to look at the future,” he said.

At the Church of the Holy Agony in East Harlem, parishioners have been fighting to keep the doors open. And at the Church of the Nativity on the Lower East Side, they’ve appealed to the Vatican.

“We are working together,” said parishioner Mercedes Sanchez. “We are being united, and thankfully we have a cannon lawyer who’s guiding us about what we should be doing legally.”

They’re hoping Cardinal Timothy Dolan hears their pleas.

Dolan said he understand how difficult it is for parishioners, but said the diocese will function more efficiently.

“What I hope they understand deep down — and I think they do — that as important as a building is, that’s not the church, and that everything they cherish there — the Mass, the sacrament, the prayer, the community, the works of charity and love that they do — that can now go on in a new structure.”

Ireland’s top Archbishop holds historic talks with “Catholic” pro-sodomite group

Pro-sodomite faith groups have met Dr Eamon Martin, the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

The meeting with the Archbishop was requested by Faith in Marriage Equality (FiME) during the recent referendum campaign on same sex marriage. The meeting took place at the Archbishop’s residence in Armagh, on Wednesday, July 22.

Dr Richard O’Leary of Faith in Marriage Equality said “We believe it is a positive step to open dialogue with the Catholic Church as a contribution to the ‘reality check’ signaled by the Church after the vote for civil marriage equality.”

He was referring to the “reality check” Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin recommended to the Catholic Church following the success of the Yes campaign in the marriage equality referendum on May 22.

O’Leary continued “We were positively received by Archbishop Martin who said he was committed to continuing dialogue and that he was particularly concerned about the pastoral care of gay persons”.

Jim O’Crowley, a gay Catholic, shared with Archbishop Martin the experiences and views of gay Catholics and their families.

The delegation had sent in advance to the Archbishop, a copy of “To have and to Hold”: stories and reflections of LGBT people their families and friends” (edited by Patricia Devlin and Brian Glennon). Archbishop Martin said that he found it helpful to read this book and also to listen to accounts by gay Catholics.

Dr O’Leary impressed on the Archbishop that the absence of affirmation of gay persons by the Churches contributes to the raised rate of suicide.

Brendan Butler, of We are Church Ireland, referred to the forthcoming Synod of Bishops in Rome in October, at which Archbishop Eamon Martin and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will represent the Irish bishops. Butler highlighted paragraph 130 of the agenda of the Synod titled |Pastoral Attention towards Persons with Homosexual Tendencies.”

Butler explained to the Archbishop “if the Catholic Church is to regain credibility not only with the gay and lesbian community but also with the wider Catholic community then existing Catholic teaching needs to change.”

He drew attention to paragraph three of the “Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the pastoral care of homosexual persons” (CDF,1986) as morally offensive as it describes “homosexual orientation as an objective disorder and ordered towards an intrinsic moral evil.”

The pro-gay faith delegation requested Archbishop Martin to consider this issue during his discussions at the Synod of Bishops in Rome. Archbishop Martin said that he was open to receiving additional material from We Are Church Ireland on this subject.

Over the Church now madness seems to reign.

The Psalmist’s trust we need, amidst our pain.

When in modern times the world began to turn its back on God, did it really think that he would not notice or that he would not care? Today’s madness is reaching a climax in which more and more souls must be realizing that for him to step in has become an absolute necessity, and that it will be a great act of mercy. However, in order not to lose heart in the meantime, let us see how even in Old Testament times the Psalmist urged God to step in, without doubting for a moment in his power to do so. The Psalms are a divinely inspired school of prayer for all time, and they apply just as much to the New Testament as to the Old. Here is Psalm 73 (74, modern numbering):—

Can Francis overcome decades of antagonism between Catholics and Evangelicals?

Somewhere in Pope Francis’s office is a document that could alter the course of Christian history. It declares an end to hostilities between Catholics and Evangelicals and says the two traditions are now “united in mission because we are declaring the same Gospel”. The Holy Father is thinking of signing the text in 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, alongside Evangelical leaders representing roughly one in four Christians in the world today.

Francis is convinced that the Reformation is already over. He believes it ended in 1999, the year the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation issued a joint declaration on justification, the doctrine at the heart of Luther’s protest.

The German firebrand had accused the Catholic Church of teaching that man was saved by faith and good works, rather than “by faith alone”.

In 1999, after extensive talks, Catholic and Lutheran theologians concluded that the two communions now shared “a common understanding of our justification by God’s grace through faith in Christ”.

In 2006, the World Methodist Council also adopted the declaration. But not one major leader of “born-again” Christians has publicly endorsed the text. So most of the world’s 600 million Evangelicals don’t realize that the protest is over. From the shantytowns of São Paulo to the high-rises of Seoul, Evangelicals and Catholics still eye each other warily.

Many of the former are reluctant even to describe Catholics as Christians, while the latter often dismiss Evangelical groups as “sects”.

But not everyone is resigned to enmity. As far back as 1984, an influential Charismatic magazine published an essay entitled “Three Streams, One River?” The author, Richard Lovelace, argued that Catholicism, Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism were three tributaries forming one great torrent of Christianity. (Many observers would count Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism as a single stream, given that most Pentecostals are Evangelicals.)

Lovelace wrote: “There will be many knots to be untied before we have a united church which is truly Catholic, Evangelical and Pentecostal.”

“Many knots to be untied”: today that phrase calls to mind Pope Francis. He has popularised devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots, which seeks Our Lady’s help in resolving seemingly intractable problems. The rift between Catholics and Evangelicals has long seemed to belong in that category.

For much of his life, Francis must have viewed Evangelicals with suspicion. An old-school Argentine Jesuit, he would have watched in dismay as his flock drifted off to Evangelical churches (nearly one in five Latin Americans now describe themselves as Protestant).

You can imagine his discomfort when, in 1999, he first celebrated Mass for charismatic Catholics. They spoke in tongues, like their Pentecostal counterparts, when he elevated the Host. But, as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he began attending noisy, praise-filled gatherings of Evangelicals and Catholics. At first, he sat discreetly sipping mate.

But in 2006 he went on stage, where he knelt as Protestant leaders prayed over him. A pastor with a microphone hollered: “Fill him with your Holy Spirit and power, Lord! In the name of Jesus!” The image of the cardinal kneeling, head bowed, beneath the outstretched hands of Evangelicals was so startling that a traditionalist magazine ran the headline: “Buenos Aires, sede vacante. The archbishop commits the sin of apostasy”.

A papal biographer says that, after the blessing, “the cardinal was on fire”. He began to meet Evangelical pastors monthly. He would arrive by public transport and enthusiastically join in their improvised prayer sessions. They never discussed indulgences or the Immaculate Conception. He now believed that their shared baptism was more important than their differences.

As Pope, he has continued to sidestep theological disputes. Unlike the former Vatican doctrinal watchdog Benedict XVI, he’s willing to say: “Let’s leave those to the theologians.”

In Buenos Aires he met a British-born South African pastor called Tony Palmer. Palmer belonged to the “convergence movement”, which seeks to blend charismatic worship with a more historically grounded liturgy and understanding of the sacraments.

The cardinal became Palmer’s “spiritual father”, but reportedly discouraged him from becoming a Catholic, arguing that he was called to serve as a “bridge-builder” between Catholics and Evangelicals. (Francis is said to have told an Evangelical leader recently: “I’m not interested in converting Evangelicals to Catholicism. I want people to find Jesus in their own community. Let’s be about showing the love of Jesus.”)


Like his mentor, Palmer believed that the Reformation had already ended. He bluntly challenged Luther’s spiritual heirs to reject the “Protestant” label. “It’s like saying you’re racist even though you’re living in a country that no longer has an Apartheid system in place,” he argued.

When Francis wanted to reach out to Evangelicals after he was elected Pope, he didn’t do the obvious things. He didn’t ask the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity to organize a conference or seek advice from the group Evangelicals and Catholics Together in America – arguably the most advanced such dialogue in the world. Instead, he rang his old friend. During a leisurely meeting at the Vatican, Palmer recorded a video of the Pontiff on his iPhone.

Designated an “Apostolic Representative for Christian Unity” by Francis, Palmer took the film to a ministers’ conference in Texas organized by prosperity gospel preacher Kenneth Copeland. Palmer introduced the film with what must count as one of the great Christian orations of the 21st century. “Brothers and sisters, Luther’s protest is over,” he said. He told the audibly stunned audience that he was speaking to them “in the spirit of Elijah”, who prepared the way for something much greater than himself.

Palmer was unaware, of course, that as he stood at the lectern he had just months left to live. But with hindsight there was a spine-tingling moment when he announced that he would introduce the papal video with a short prayer. “This was a dying man’s prayer,” he said. “And when you know that you are about to die, you certainly pray the most important prayers.”

Palmer read John 17:20-22, in which Jesus prayed that his followers “may be one”. Francis’s face appeared on a big screen, unflatteringly close to the lens. In his short, impromptu message the Pope referred to Palmer, who belonged to an Anglican group that is independent from the Archbishop of Canterbury, as his “bishop brother”.

Francis then proclaimed that “the miracle of unity has begun”. The audience greeted the video with whooping, laughter and a babble of tongues. Copeland summoned Palmer back on stage to record a reply on his iPhone. The video ended with all the ministers – some of whom may have believed the Pope was a false teacher just minutes earlier – raising their hands and addressing Francis in unison with the cry: “Be blessed!”

Not long after, Palmer brought Evangelical heavyweights representing millions of churchgoers to the Vatican to meet Francis. The encounter was remarkably informal.

The Pope spoke of the need for all Christians to have a personal relationship with Jesus. “Sir, as an Evangelist, that deserves a high-five,” said James Robinson, who helped to inspire the rise of America’s Religious Right in the 1980s. Once an interpreter explained what a high-five was, the Vicar of Christ slapped the beaming televangelist’s hand.

That day Palmer gave Francis a draft text called the “Declaration of Faith in Unity for Mission”, which he hoped the Pope would sign with Evangelical leaders in 2017. A month later, Palmer died after a motorcycle accident in England – an event so shocking it has inspired mind-bending conspiracy theory videos on YouTube.

Francis hasn’t given any public sign of whether he will sign the declaration. But he has taken steps that seem to prepare the ground for it. Days after his friend’s death he became the first pope to visit a Pentecostal church, offering an apology for Catholic persecution of the movement in Italy. Last month he asked forgiveness of the Waldensians, a communion regarded as the world’s oldest Evangelical church.

But even if the Pope does sign the declaration in two years’ time, full, visible unity between Catholics and Evangelicals will remain unlikely. As Fr Dwight Longenecker, an American Catholic priest who was raised Evangelical, explains, there is no single, authoritative body that could be reconciled with Rome.

“‘Evangelicals’ could include the most rabid, anti-Catholic, fire-breathing fundamentalists right through to the prosperity gospel televangelists, ‘Evangelical’ Anglo-Catholics, charismatics and modernist Protestants,”he says.

He suggests that few are truly interested in unity with the Catholic Church. “For most Evangelicals any reunion with Rome is very low on the agenda if it is there at all,” he says. “This is for two reasons: despite their current friendliness toward Catholics they still have a deep distrust of Rome. They simply cannot conceive of the idea that ‘Roman Catholicism’ has much good in it. They might view us as brother Christians, but we are still deeply deluded.

“Second, their ecclesiology is that of the invisible church only. They do not see the thousands of Protestant churches as a problem because the ‘institutional church’ is man-made and temporal, so it doesn’t really matter which one you belong to. Formal reunion of any kind, for them, simply doesn’t matter.”

Ulf Ekman, a Swedish megachurch pastor who became a Catholic last year, agrees that many Evangelicals are afraid of “a Superchurch”. Still, he believes that old wounds can be healed by what he calls “a parallel approach”. “That is, both sides coming closer on equal terms and recognizing each other with an approach of avoiding any appearance of submission and triumphalism, more converging then conversion.” This, of course, fits well with Francis’s own thinking, which he captures in pithy phrases such as “reconciled diversity” and “unity without uniformity”.

In order to preserve diversity, Francis could offer Evangelicals in the more liturgically minded “convergence movement” something similar to the ordinariate, which has allowed groups of ex-Anglicans to be reunited with Rome while retaining elements of their patrimony. Alternatively, the Pope might create an “Evangelical apostolate”, allowing reconciled Evangelicals to promote their distinctive style of worship and Scripture study within the Catholic Church.

Fr Longenecker says Francis could also encourage ex-Evangelicals to found religious communities, giving the example of American singer-songwriter John Michael Talbot, who leads an informal religious community of “Evangelical Catholics”.

But there is no evidence that Francis is considering any of these options. Perhaps he thinks it will be up to his successors to explore these paths to unity. He may believe his own mission is limited to bulldozing away the debris currently blocking the route.

Meanwhile, the Pope is encouraging Catholics to be more evangelical with a small “e”. He seems to want the faithful to become more like “born-again” Christians: to ditch the “funeral” faces, radiate joy and take the Gospel out of the church and on to the streets.

Thanks to Francis and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement, the faithful are likely to look considerably more like Evangelicals by the end of the century than they did at the beginning. But whether Evangelicals will be more Catholic remains to be seen.

Why Americans are cooling on Pope Francis??

The popularity of Pope Francis has plummeted in the United States, as his emphasis on climate change and income inequality places him at odds with conservatives.

When Pope Francis makes his first trip to the US this September, fewer Americans may be tuning in to hear him speak.

That’s because the pope’s popularity is plummeting, according to a new Gallup poll. Today, 59 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Pope Francis, down from 76 percent in February 2014.

The stark drop in his popularity is driven by a decline among Catholics and political conservatives, the latter of which appear to be turning away from the pope in droves.

Some 45 percent of conservatives now view the pope favorably, down sharply from 72 percent last year. Catholics are less enamored too, with 71 percent viewing the pope favorably, down from 89 percent last year.

When he swept in to the papacy, Francis charmed the world. As an archbishop, he was known for living in a simple apartment, taking the bus to work, and cooking his own meals. He carried that humility into his papacy and became a champion for the poor. He has won the admiration of Christians and non-Christians around the world by focusing more on engaging with other faiths and protecting the environment.

That goodwill was reflected in a 2014 Gallup poll that pegged his favorability at 76 percent.

What went wrong?

As the Monitor explained earlier this year, the Pope’s plummeting popularity is emblematic of a rift that’s opened between him and some conservatives over divisive issues in the culture wars.

Since he entered the papacy, Pope Francis has welcomed gays and lesbians, attributed climate change to human activity, and has said the Big Bang and evolution are not incompatible with religion.

“If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them?” Francis once said of gays and lesbians.

“I don’t know if it [human activity] is the only cause, but mostly, in great part, it is man who has slapped nature in the face,” the pope said about climate change during a trip to the Philippines, as quoted by the Associated Press. “We have, in a sense, taken over nature.”

It was enough to set some conservatives teeth on edge.

“You demean the office that you hold and you demean the church whom it is your sworn duty to protect and defend and advance,” Christopher Monckton, a former adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and a prominent climate change denier, said earlier this year in a Rome press conference warning Pope Francis against speaking on climate change. “Stand back and listen to both sides,” said Mr. Monckton, who is Catholic, “and do not take sides in politics.”

Like his environmentalism, Francis’s passionate denunciations of income inequality, trickle-down economics, and overconsumption in the developed world, are unlikely to win the affection of conservatives.

“I don’t get economic policy from my bishops or my cardinal or my pope,” GOP presidential contender Jeb Bush told supporters after a draft of the pope’s letter on climate change leaked in June.

The pope’s stance on these issues “can alienate conservatives,” commentator and practicing Catholic Ed Morrissey, who writes for Hot Air, a conservative blog, told the Washington Post. “I’m not sure it’s a great idea for him to be involving himself into micro-economics and the same with climate change.”

If conservatives are backing away from the pope, one would expect liberals to flock to him. But the pope is getting less love from the left, too. For them, the grievances are different: Francis has not changed church teachings on issues like abortion, contraception, and gay marriage, he has not sanctioned the ordination of women as priests, or allowed priests to marry.

Which is why Francis’ favorable rating among liberals fell 14 percentage points, from 82 percent in 2014 to 68 percent this year.

That said, Francis is more popular than the previous pope, Pope Benedict XVI. But he is less popular than Benedict’s predecessor, Pope John Paul II, whose favorability never dipped under 60 percent during his 26 years as pontiff.

Pope Benedict received his greatest favorability rating in 2008, when he visited the US. Pope John Paul II also received a boost from his 1993 and 1999 visits to the US. Perhaps when Francis visits this September, when he will become the first pope to address a joint session of Congress, his popularity may rebound.

Of the earlier life of Mary Magdalene we know only that she was “a woman who was a sinner.” From the depth of her degradation she raised her eyes to Jesus with sorrow, hope, and love. All covered with shame, she came in where Jesus was at meat, and knelt behind Him. She said not a word, but bathed His feet with her tears, wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed them in humility, and at their touch her sins and her stain were gone. Then she poured on them the costly unguent prepared for far other uses; and His own divine lips rolled away her reproach, spoke her absolution, and bade her go in peace. Thenceforward she ministered to Jesus, sat at His feet, and heard His Words. She was one of the family “whom Jesus so loved” that He raised her brother Lazarus from the dead. Once again, on the eve of His Passion, she brought the precious ointment, and, now purified and beloved, poured it on His head, and the whole house of God is still filled with the fragrance of her anointing. She stood with Our Lady and St. John at the foot of the cross, the representative of the many who have had much forgiven. To her first, after His blessed Mother, and through her to His apostles, Our Lord gave the certainty of His resurrection; and to her first He made Himself known, calling her by her name, because she was His. When the faithful were scattered by persecution the family of Bethany found refuge in ‘ Provence. The cave in which St. Mary lived for thirty years is still seen, and the chapel on the mountain-top, in which she was caught up daily, like St. Paul, to “visions and revelations of the Lord.” When her end drew near she was borne to a spot still marked by a “sacred pillar,” where the holy Bishop Maximin awaited her; and when she had received her Lord, she peacefully fell asleep’ in death.

And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that He sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment; and standing behind at His feet, she began to wash His feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. And the Pharisee, who had invited Him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth Him, that she is a sinner. Mary Magdalen, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, through love of the truth, washed away in her tears the defilement of her sins, and the words of the Truth are fulfilled which He spake Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much. She who had remained chilly in sin, became fiery through love. When even His disciples went away again unto their own home, Mary still stood without at the sepulchre of Christ, weeping. She sought Him Whom her soul loved, but she found Him not. She searched for Him with tears; she yearned with strong desire for Him Who, she believed, had been taken away. And thus it befell her, that being the only one who had remained to seek Him, she was the only one that saw Him. It is the truth that the backbone of a good work is perseverance.

At first when she sought Him, she found Him not; she went on searching, and so it came to pass that she found Him; and this was so, to the end that her longing might grow in earnestness, and so in its earnestness might find what it sought.
