A Catholic church schism under Pope Francis isn’t out of the question

Pope Francis

The conservative backlash against the liberal pope’s authority has been fierce, and is gathering momentum

Until this weekend, I had largely believed in the liberal narrative which holds that Pope Francis’s reforms of the Catholic church are unstoppable. But the conservative backlash has been so fierce and so far-reaching that for the first time a split looks a real, if distant, possibility.

One leading conservative, the Australian Cardinal George Pell, published over the weekend a homily he had prepared for the traditional Latin mass at which he started ruminating on papal authority. Pope Francis, he said, was the 266th pope, “and history has seen 37 false or antipopes”.

Why mention them, except to raise the possibility that Francis might turn out to be the 38th false pope, rather than the 266th real one?

This is a fascinating nudge in the direction of an established strain of conservative fringe belief: that liberalising popes are not in fact real popes, but imposters, sent by the devil. The explanation has an attractively deranged logic: if the pope is always right, as traditionalists would like to believe, and if this particular pope is clearly wrong, as traditionalists also believe, then obviously this pope is not the real pope. Splinter groups have held this view ever since the liberalising papacy of Pope John XXIII at the start of the 1960s. I don’t think that’s what Pell meant, but it was odd and threatening to bring the subject up at all.

The other warning of schism, though veiled in regret, came from the conservative American journalist Ross Douthat, who wrote on Sunday that “[Conservative Catholics] might want to consider the possibility that they have a role to play, and that this pope may be preserved from error only if the church itself resists him.”

There is quite a lot that is false or comical in the conservatives’ claims, as you’d expect of any propaganda. Douthat makes the historically absurd claim that “The Catholic church was willing to lose the kingdom of England, and by extension the entire English-speaking world, over the principle that when a first marriage is valid a second is adulterous,” which is wrong on two counts – the first is that the Popes cannot have thought themselves in danger of losing the kingdom of England when the struggle started; the second is that King Henry VIII entirely agreed with them about marriage. What he wanted was not a divorce, but an annulment – the right to declare that his own first marriage had all along been invalid. In fact, though he put two wives away, executed two more, and lost one to illness, he never once got divorced. In this, as in other ways, he was not a liberal.

Then there is the outrage that Francis is “stacking the synod’s ranks with supporters of a sweeping change” – as if stacking the ranks of bishops were not what all Popes try to do, and what his predecessors had certainly enforced. That Francis has very publicly demoted the senior American traditionalist, Cardinal Raymond Burke, has upset Burke and frightened other traditionalists. But we’re just emerging from 30 years of liberals outraged by sackings and demotions of their leaders. The papal slipper may be on the other foot this time, but it has always booted bishops out.

Underlying this, though, is an absolutely solid point. Jesus himself condemned divorce quite unequivocally and the Catholic church has always followed that line in principle. In practice, things are rather different, but an open, obvious change would be, as Pell charged, “a doctrinal backflip” – and Pell, along with many other conservatives, defines the Catholic church as one incapable of changing in that way. So if it does appear to change, it’s not the Catholic church any more. And that is the logic of schism.

We have no idea whether things will actually get that far. Pell and Douthat represent a small minority of the laity, and a minority even of bishops, as the voting figures from the synod show, but it is substantial, determined and potentially very well-funded. American right-wingers are already outraged by Pope Francis’s teaching on poverty and his hostility to capitalism. If they can pose instead as defenders of sexual virtue this will exacerbate the already bitter splits within the US Catholic church. Any pope would see it as essential to avert that possibility and if that happens, all liberal bets are off.

Cardinal Burke: ‘I’m Praying Very Fervently That This Coming Year This Confusion Will Stop’ (Video)

Cardinal Burke: “A very serious responsibility to try to correct as quickly and as effectively as possible the scandal caused by the midterm report” that was published during the synod of bishops discussing the family that met in Rome earlier this month.

(CNSNews.com) – Cardinal Raymond Burke, the Prefect of the Sacred Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest court of the Catholic Church, said in an interview with CNSNews.com recorded Friday that he sees “a very serious responsibility to try to correct as quickly and as effectively as possible the scandal caused by the midterm report” that was published during the synod of bishops discussing the family that met in Rome earlier this month.

In the interview, Burke discussed Catholic teaching on marriage, homosexuality and the rights of children.

“We have to recognize that if we don’t get it right about marriage–in other words, if we’re not faithful to the word of Christ, to the truth which Christ announced to us about marriage–in the church, I don’t know how people can trust us with regard to teaching the truth of the faith in any other matter,” Burke said.

“We’re talking here about the very foundation of the life of the church, the first cell of our life, in the marital union and the formation of the family,” he said, “and if we don’t uphold the sanctity of the marital bond we have really not only abandoned the Catholic faith but really abandoned the Christian faith in the sense that we are abandoning the natural law itself.”

At the end of the interview, Cardinal Burke said that the church needs to once again clearly proclaim its teachings on marriage and sexuality and noted that it has already produced many texts explaining these teachings.

“The church must now in this period hold up the beauty, the splendor, of this teaching for the sake of her own members that they not be confused about the truth but also for the sake of our world and the church’s call to serve the world by proclaiming the truth and by giving witness to it,” he said.

“And, so, I’m praying very fervently that this coming year that this confusion will stop and instead that there will begin to be a strong emphasis on the beauty of the truth of the church’s teaching on marriage and on human life and human sexuality,” he said.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.” 2 Timothy 3:1

Our society is rapidly devolving, spiraling down at an astonishing rate of speed. After the San Francisco Giants won the World Series, a different spirit began to rise which quickly became dark, angry and violent. People were shot, people were stabbed, the streets set on firein absolute rage by gangs of sports fans who behaved more like demon-possessed wild animals than like human beings. This wasn’t a protest about police brutality, or racism, or about any thing else other than sheer, unbridled lunacy. And remember, this was done by the fans of the winning team.

America is becoming a cold, angry, unrecognizable place. The light of the Gospel is growing fainter and fainter in these last moments of the Church Age right before the Rapture. This story and these photos are just a tiny taste of what life will be like in the Tribulation. The Spirit of Antichrist. Avoid it all and get saved, time is running out…

SAN FRANCISCO — A celebration in San Francisco’s streets over the Giants’ World Series victory turned raucous and violent in some areas with people injured by gunfire, officers hurt by bottles thrown by revelers, and police making arrests.

The partying unfolded peacefully with fans gathering in the streets and uncorking champagne, lighting bonfires, dancing in a mosh pit and hugging strangers on Wednesday night as their team scored its third series win in as many championship appearances, a triumph all the more gratifying by its arrival at the end of a seventh, winner-takes-all 3-2 game.

But in some areas, the atmosphere grew rowdier as the night wore on.

Violence left three people injured in separate incidents, two by gunshots and one in a stabbing, police spokesman officer Gordon Shyy said. The gunshot victims’ wounds were non life-threatening, but he didn’t have information on the stabbing.

Shortly after the celebrating began, Shyy said officers made “a handful of arrests” as fans filled the streets and blocked traffic around the Civic Center, in the Mission District and on Market Street within walking distance of AT&T Park. No updated arrest figure was available later.

“Police personnel were assaulted with bottles on Market Street and Mission district. Officers in the Southern district were also struck with bottles.”

“So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.” Joel 3:17

Israel’s closure of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, following an assassination attempt Wednesday, is tantamount to a “declaration of war,” Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday morning.

Abbas’s remarks came after a suspect in the shooting of a prominent right-wing Jewish activist was killed in a gunfight with the police in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Abu Tor. Police closed the compound early Thursday out of fear of clashes in the wake of the shooting of Yehuda Glick, who campaigned for Jewish rights on the site, and as Israeli right-wing groups vowed to march on the site.

“This dangerous Israeli escalation is a declaration of war on the Palestinian people and its sacred places and on the Arab and Islamic nation,” his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina quoted him as saying.

The director of the Al-Aqsa Mosque called the site’s closure unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is paying a toll for the events in Jerusalem,” he said.

“The mosque is a place for prayer and worship and all Muslims have the right to access it,” the director told the Ma’an news agency.

Israeli authorities turned back right-wing Likud MK Moshe Feiglin, who tried to make his way onto the Temple Mount Thursday morning in response to the shooting of Glick, a leader of the Temple Mount Faithful activist group.

Russian Police Raid Islamic Centers, Mosques, Muslim Schools, And Shut Down Jehovah’s Witness Churches

By Theodore Shoebat

In Crimea, which is now under Russian jurisdiction, police are now raiding Islamic centers, they have shut down numerous Jehovah’s Witness churches, and have even banned the Global Human Rights Torch Relay by the Chinese cult, Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that incorporates Buddhism with some Taoist elements. According to one report:

The human-rights situation in Crimea has seriously deteriorated since the region’s annexation by Russia in March, the Council of Europe said in a report Monday, citing allegations of politically motivated killings and disappearances on the peninsula.

“Clearly, the problems are much more serious now,” said Nils Muiznieks, the council’s human-rights commissioner and one of the few international monitors to be allowed into Crimea since it was annexed from Ukraine.

Crimean Tatars —the region’s Muslim minority—as well as ethnic Ukrainians, pro-Kiev activists and journalists have been targets of intimidation and violence, often perpetrated by “self-defense forces,” known as Samooborona, which have been acting as an informal police force on the peninsula, the council said in its report.

The council has counted at least two killings of activists that appeared to be politically motivated and five disappearances, said Mr. Muiznieks. The council has also received “several dozen” reports of abductions, in which activists were removed from the Crimean peninsula and onto the Ukrainian mainland against their will, he said.

These incidents “send out shock waves of fear to the politically active part of the population,” Mr. Muiznieks said. The council was promised updates on authorities’ investigation of these incidents but hasn’t received them, he said.

Both Ukraine and Russia are members of the Council of Europe, which is also home to the European Court of Human Rights, the only international court that can pronounce binding human-rights judgments on member governments.

During a two-day visit to Crimea in September, Mr. Muiznieks met with Sergei Aksyonov, the current leader of Crimea, and Oleg Belaventsev, the regional representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin , and with local community and religious leaders. That mission was preceded by visits to Moscow and Kiev.

The situation of the Tatars is particularly serious, the report said, with regular raids on religious institutions, businesses and private homes carried out by armed and masked guards claiming to look for extremist materials and weapons. “I’ve not heard of any reports of weapons being discovered,” Mr. Muiznieks said, adding that there was no tradition or evidence of religious extremism among Crimean Tatars.

Mr. Muiznieks said the raids continued after his visit to Crimea, despite assurances by local authorities that they would seek to resolve the problem.

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” Romans 1:26,27

Writing in an article for Bloomberg Businessweek, the 53-year-old Cook explained his previous reticence to talk publicly about his sexuality as a balance between his personal privacy and responsibility to help others.

“If hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.”

Gay Pride: “Throughout my professional life, I’ve tried to maintain a basic level of privacy,” Cook said, adding “I’ve come to realize that my desire for personal privacy has been holding me back from doing something more important.”

Cook’s sexual orientation has been an open secret in Silicon Valley, and while he openly supported gay rights he he never spoke about his sexuality in the past.

His silence led to a number of public outings including a high profile example in late Junewhen CNBC co-anchor Simon Hobbs spoke about closeted gay CEOs.

“I think Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact he’s gay at the head of Apple,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs quickly realized his mistake saying, “Oh dear, was that an error?”

The Catholic Church has called for Halloween to become HOLYWEEN!

Pope Francis warned the conference of exorcists that they must treat those possessed with 'kindness'

He said: ‘Many say Halloween is a simple carnival, but in fact there is nothing innocent or fun about it – it is the antechamber to something much more dangerous. ‘There are always more evil rituals, animal sacrifices, desecrations of cemeteries and thefts of sacred bones at the time of the 31 October. Participating in Halloween is ‘like an initiation into the occult’, he said. ‘For the sects it is the best time of year to recruit new members. From here the door to the devil can be opened. For this reason its necessary for us to speak out and not play down the danger.’ To replace the ‘dangerous’ festival the Catholic Church in Italy have now launched the initiative ‘Holyween’, he said. ‘While most people are seeped in zombies and horror we put on our door or windows a light or an image evocative of the saints.

‘And then there will be masses, prayer vigils and worship to celebrate the saints and victory of good over evil.’ The conference of 300 exorcists from all over the world took place over the weekend after being officially recognized by the Vatican in June. At the conference, Pope Francis warned them that they must treat those possessed with ‘kindness’. He wrote in a message: ‘Those who perform this particular ministry, in conjunction with the bishops’ must work ‘with love and kindness from the church towards those who suffer because of the evil one’. More than many of his predecessors, Pope Francis likes to insist that Satan is real and speaks frequently about the Devil’s work. Last year he was captured performing an apparent exorcism. In astonishing footage he placed his hands on the head of a boy in a wheelchair, reciting an intense prayer until the boy slumped down exhaling sharply.

The Pope in the World Meeting of Popular Movements: This isn’t ideology, it’s reality! We must put humanity in the center!

francis i am not a marxist

(VIS) – This morning in the Synod Hall the Holy Father met with participants in the World Meeting of Popular Movements (27 to 29 October), organized by the Pontifical Council “Justice and Peace” in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences and with the leaders of various movements.
The Pope spoke about the term solidarity, “a word that is not always well accepted”, that is much maligned and almost “unrepeatable”; however it is a word that indicates much more than a few sporadic acts of generosity. It means thinking and acting in terms of community, of prioritizing the life of all over and above the appropriation of goods by the few. It also means fighting the structural causes of poverty, inequality, unemployment, lack of land and housing, and the denial of social and labor rights. It means facing the destructive effects of the empire of money: forced displacement, painful migration, human trafficking, drugs, war, violence and all these situations that many of you suffer and that we are all called upon to transform. Solidarity, in its deepest sense, is a way of making history and this is what the popular movements do”.
He went on to remark that this meeting does not correspond to any form of ideology and that the movements work not with ideas, but with reality. “It is not possible to tackle poverty by promoting containment strategies to merely reassure, rendering the poor ‘domesticated’ , harmless and passive”, he continued. “This meeting corresponds to a more concrete desire, that any father or mother would want for their children: an aspiration that should be within the reach of all but which we sadly see is increasingly unavailable to the majority: land, housing and work. It is strange, but if I talk about this, there are those who think that the Pope is communist”.
“Today, the phenomenon of exploitation and oppression assumes a new dimension, a graphical and hard edge of social injustice: those that cannot be integrated, the marginalized, are discarded, “cast-offs”. This is the throwaway culture … This happens when the center of an economic system is the god of money and not humanity, the human person. At the center of every social or economic system there must be the person, the image of God, created as the denominator of the universe. When humanity is displaced and supplanted by money, this disruption of values occurs”.
Pope Francis mentioned the problem of unemployment, and added that “every worker, whether or not he is part of the formal system of paid work, has the right to fair remuneration, social security and a pension. ‘Cartoneros’, those who live by recycling waste, street vendors, garment makers, craftspeople, fishermen, farmers, builders, miners, workers in companies in receivership, cooperatives and common trades that are excluded from employment rights, who are denied the possibility of forming trades unions, who do not have an adequate or stable income. Today I wish to unite my voice to theirs and to accompany them in their struggle”.
He went on the mention the theme of peace and ecology. “We cannot strive for land, housing, or work if we are not able to maintain peace or if we destroy the planet. … Creation is not our property, that we may exploit as we please; far less so, the property of the few. Creation is a gift, a wonderful gift that God gave us, to care for and to use for the benefit of all, always with respect and gratitude”.
“Why, instead of this, are we accustomed to seeing decent work destroyed, the eviction of many families, the expulsion of peasants from the land, war and the abuse of nature? Because this system has removed humanity from the center and replaced it with something else! Because of the idolatrous worship of money! Because of the globalization of indifference – ‘what does it matter to me what happens to others, I’ll defend myself’”. Because the world has forgotten God, the Father: it has become an orphan because it has turned aside from God”.
He emphasized that “Christians have something very good, a guide to action, a revolutionary programme, we might say. I strongly recommend that you read it, that you read the Beatitudes”.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of walking together and remarking that “popular movements express the urgent need to revitalize our democracies, that are so often hijacked by many factors. It is impossible to imagine a future for society without the active participation of the majority, and this role extends beyond the logical procedures of formal democracy”.

CINO John Kerry: Jihadists Exploit The “Beautiful Religion” Of Islam

Kerry: Extremism Exploits a ‘Beautiful Religion!’

(CNSNews.com) – The response to Islamist extremism, which “exploits a legitimate and beautiful religion,” must include offering alternatives to young people who lack opportunities and “feel oppressed,” Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday.

“The challenge of our generation is going to be to deal with religious radical extremism, which exploits a legitimate and beautiful religion that is being totally distorted, has nothing to do with what they purport to be pursuing, and nevertheless captures the minds of some of our young people – even in America,” Kerry told staff at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa.

He noted that more than 100 Americans have traveled to the region to fight with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS/ISIL), while more had done so from European countries, Australia and elsewhere.

“And so we have to push back. We’re not going to win this exclusively through our efforts on the ground in this coalition with kinetic efforts,” he said, referring to the U.S.-led coalition’s military operations against the jihadist group. “We’re going to win this with ideas.”

Kerry then picked up a theme he raises periodically, linking the allure of jihadist terrorism to a lack of opportunities among frustrated young people.

“We’re also going to win it with better alternatives for a whole bunch of young people who today live in places where they feel oppressed, where they don’t have a lot of opportunity, there’s not enough education, they don’t have jobs,” he said. “But they know what the rest of the world has because they all have smart phones, they all have mobile devices, and they’re all seeing what’s going on and they trade thoughts.”

“And frankly, there have been years and years of anger and frustration building up for a whole lot of different reasons in South Central Asia, Middle East, Horn of Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and different places,” Kerry continued.

“So our challenge is to not make them think that modernity and rule of law and civil society and states that have long existed is somehow the enemy,” he said. “And what we have to do is take our values and our principles out there as never before.”
