NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

God is our Helper, and He will always come to our aid He will open the ears of His mercy to our prayers, and will not allow us to be tempted beyond our strength. Let us obey therefore with joy the precepts of the Lord; let us worthily attend In the temple the mysteries of the holy Mass, and partake of the Body of the Lord, the manna of our souls.

This day’s liturgy puts before us in the Epistle and Gospel, the terrible punishments incurred by the Israelites on account of their immorality and irreligion. Twenty-three thousand Hebrews perished in one day on account of their lust; several were killed by serpents for having tempted God by complaining that they had no other food but manna; many were killed by the destroying angel on account of their murmuring (Epistle), and over a million Jews perished when Jerusalem was destroyed for having rejected the Messiah. They were thrown out of the Kingdom of God as the sellers were driven from the temple which is its figure, for having transformed the house of prayer into a den of thieves (Gospel).

The Gentiles, called in their stead, must therefore be faithful to their vocation and take care not to fall in their turn (Epistle). Let them obey therefore with holy joy the commandments of the Lord (Offertory), let them worthily attend in the temple the Eucharistic mysteries in which the work of our redemption is daily enacted (Secret) and eat the flesh of Jesus which is the true manna of our souls (Communion). Then will God always come to their help (Introit), He will open the ears of His Mercy to their prayers (Collect), and will not allow them to be tempted beyond their strength (Epistle).

 St. Lawrence

“Once the mother of false gods, the Bride of Christ today, this time by Laurent victory endeavors, O Rome, thy name. Victor superb kings thy empire imposed on nations; but thy glory missed, having reduced barbarism, have also tamed unclean idols. Victory of blood, but not more tumultuous, like those of a Camille, a Caesar; fight of faith who immolated herself, and death destroyed death. What voice, what praises celebrate death? On which mode we worthily sing like a martyr? ”

Thus begins the sublime poem where Prudence spent the traditions of his time, yet so close of the great struggle, an incomparable aura surrounding the front of the Roman deacon. It was a time when enchanting eloquence of St. Ambrose repeated it herself meet Sixtus and the Levite path of martyrdom. Before Bee Milan, before the singer Crowns, Damase, Supreme Pontiff, wrote down for posterity in his monumental inscriptions worthy of the majesty of the time of triumph, the victory of Laurent by faith alone that the poet extolled in immortal verses.

Rome multiplied demonstrations in honor of the invincible athlete on the burning grill, prayed for deliverance. Not content to insert his name in the sacred Canon, it surrounded the anniversary of his birth in heaven the same privileges solemnity vigil and octave, that glorious Apostles its founders. Crimson blood on his many other witnesses of Christ, every step of the Levite ground once every Remember Lawrence saw a church arise certifying the special gratitude of the queen city. Among the many sanctuaries in various recalling his blessed memory, who kept the body of the martyr took place following churches Lateran, St. Mary of the Esquiline, Peter at the Vatican, Paul on the road to Ostia Saint Lawrence outside the Walls completed the number of major basilicas are reserved the prerogative of the Roman Pontiff, as the expression of its universal and immediate jurisdiction over all churches as representing the patriarchates of Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, Jerusalem, between which divides the universe. Thus, for Lawrence, the Eternal City finished to show for it is the center of the world and the source of all grace.

As Peter and Paul are the wealth, not only Rome, but of the earth, therefore Rome also saw Laurent hailed as the honor of the world; ennobled by his heroism, regenerated humanity personified in himself the courage of other martyrs. At the beginning of this month, Stephen even got up from where he had lain in death, come to confound his honors Protomartyr with glory deacon of Sixtus II in the community in a single grave. Triumph, as the struggle of all, it seemed to reach the last summit that the persecution had to still have terrible back and multiply for half a century slaughter, the victory of Laurent was considered the blow that knocked paganism the heart; hell had struck to his loss, a more inflexible than its lights Love.

st lawrence feast

“The demon said Prudence, had pressed into a fierce struggle the witness of God; he himself fell pierced with wounds, and remained for ever floored. This saint’s death athlete was the real death of temples; Vesta then saw desert palladium, without being able to retaliate. All these straights, traditional superstitions that Numa had once instituted, hurry, O Christ, thy courts, and sing hymns to your martyr. Lights senate Luperci Flamines and kiss the threshold of the Apostles and Saints. We see many illustrious families, patricians and noble matrons wish to offer their clarissimus line, guaranteeing cherished hopes. The pontiff, forehead once girded strips, joined under the sign of the Cross; Visit the Vestal Claudia, O Laurent thy sanctuary “.

Do not be surprised if the top of the seven hills, the solemnity of the day immediately fills the universe echoes of his triumphant joy. “While it would be impossible for Rome to keep hidden, proclaimed St. Augustine, as it is the crown of Lawrence escapes the eyes”. In both East and West, Byzantium and Rome peoples and princes founded temples in his honor. In return, the testimony of the Bishop of Hippo, “its benefits could not count, showing what his merit who prayed, without being granted?”

Therefore we also, we conclude with Maximus of Turin, “concurring in this devotion throughout the world celebrating the triumph of the blessed Lawrence, understand that this is a holy thing, and it pleases God that we honor in the fervor of our souls birth to heaven one whose radiant flame spread today on the Universal Church of Christ shine victory. For his badge purity of soul that made him Levite, to the fullness of faith which earned him the dignity of martyrdom, it is precisely because we exalt as almost the equal of the Apostles “.

EPISTLE:   I Corinthians 10. 6-13

Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.

Brethren, let us not covet evil things, as they also coveted: Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them: as it is written “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished by the serpents. Neither do you murmur, as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them in figure, and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are to come. Wherefore he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall. Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human: and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.

GRADUAL:  Psalm 8: 2

O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is Thy Name in the whole earth. V. For Thy magnificence is elevated above the Heavens. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ps. 58: 3) Deliver me from my enemies, O my God: and defend me from them that rise up against me. Alleluia.
